Where to watch free horror movies online

Embarq: If you like old scary movies, then head on over to Embarq where you'll find a collection of black and white classics such as the 1968 version of "Night of the Living Dead" and the creepy 1922 silent flick based on Bram Stoker's Dracula "Nosferatu." The movies are about an hour and a half long, and play in a small pop-up screen. Quality is good, and best of all they're free to watch.

Hulu:
You can find anything on Hulu, but the 66.6 Second Film Festival is a quick way to get your Halloween fix. If you're looking for longer features, Hulu has a nice selection of free horror movies and TV shows. You have to sign up for an account to watch them, but it's well worth it. Some of the movies worth watching on Hulu include:
"Amityville 2," "Ghostbusters," "Ed Gein," "Underworld Evolution," and "28 Days Later."

Joost: This site recently released a web-based player so you don't have to install desktop clients to enjoy free horror movies. There's not a whole lot of selection, but you can find some interesting documentaries like this one. You also have to sign up for an account. Movies to watch: "Christine," "The Blob," and "Little Shop of Horrors."

Netflix:
Dyers.org put together a list of 85+ free Halloween movies you can watch on Netflix on demand if you have an account. It's a pretty impressive list that includes newer movies like Bram Stoker's "Dracula," "Child's Play," "Ghost Rider," "Vacancy," and "Silence of the Lambs." The bad news is you'll need to have one of those Roku Netflix players or a special Netflix-ready Blu-ray player in order to watch these free movies on your TV. The good news is in the future, Mac, TiVo, and Xbox 360 owners will be able to subscribe to the streaming service too. Until then you can watch movies on your PC if you're a subscriber. Depp on Duty for 'Pirates 4'

After earning over $2.6 billion dollars at the worldwide box office, how could Disney not demand another installment of their lucrative film franchise? Luckily for the Mouse House, Johnny Depp has agreed to swashbuckle once more as Captain Jack Sparrow.
That's not the only project in the works for the actor.

He has been cast as Tonto in a movie version of The Lone Ranger and as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burtons version of Alice in Wonderland, due out in 2010.

"Mummy" beats Batman at foreign box office

"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" replaced "The Dark Knight" in the top spot at the foreign box office during the weekend after opening at No. 1 in 26 of its 28 markets.

The third film in the adventure series grossed an estimated $59.5 million, substantially outpacing comparable openings for 1999's "The Mummy" ($16.7 million) and 2001's "The Mummy Returns" ($21.5 million) in the same markets.

The film, starring Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello and Michelle Yeoh, opened at No. 2 in North America, as "The Dark Knight" extended its reign for a third weekend.

"The Dark Knight," meanwhile, drew $37 million from 51 markets. The total for the Batman saga rose to $202.5 million.

Other foreign totals: "Kung Fu Panda," $328 million; "Wanted," $115.6 million; "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," $246 million; "The Incredible Hulk," $111.5 million; and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," $459 million. Read More......

Bale's Batman voice too much?

Though "The Dark Knight" has been a bona fide cultural event, boasting rave reviews and boffo box office, it hasn't been immune to criticism. Some have quibbled with its political undercurrents, and others have criticized a muddled theme.

But here's the critique most widely held: Why does Batman talk like the offspring of Clint Eastwood and a grizzly bear?

Donning the costume for the second time, Christian Bale has delved deeper into the lower registers. As Bruce Wayne, his voice is as smooth as his finely pressed suits. But once he puts the cape on, the transformation of his vocal chords is just as dramatic as his costume change.

Particularly when his rage boils over, Bale's Batman growls in an almost beastly fashion, reflecting how close he teeters between do-gooder and vengeance-crazed crusader.

"The Dark Knight" hauled in $43.8 million to rank as Hollywood's top movie for the third straight weekend, fending off "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" which opened a close second with $42.5 million. It has earned $394.9 million in just 17 days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Though much of the voice effect is Bale's own doing, under the guidance of director Christopher Nolan and supervising sound editor Richard King, the frequency of his Batman voice was modulated to exaggerate the effect.

Critics and fans have noticed.

"His Batman rasps his lines in a voice that's deeper and hammier than ever," said NPR's David Edelstein.

The New Yorker's David Denby praised the urgency of Bale's Batman, but lamented that he "delivers his lines in a hoarse voice with an unvarying inflection."

Reviewing the film for MSNBC, Alonso Duralde wrote that Bale's Batman in "Batman Begins" "sounded absurdly deep, like a 10-year-old putting on an `adult' voice to make prank phone calls. This time, Bale affects an eerie rasp, somewhat akin to Brenda Vaccaro doing a Miles Davis impression."

Before the similes run too far afield, it's worth considering where the concept of a throaty Batman comes from.

In his portrayal on the `60s "Batman" TV series, Adam West didn't alter his voice between Bruce Wayne and Batman. Decades later when Tim Burton brought "Batman" to the big screen in a much darker incarnation, Michael Keaton's inflection was notably but not considerably different from one to the other.

But it was a lesser-known actor who, a few years after Burton's film, made perhaps the most distinct imprint on Batman's voice. Kevin Conroy, as the voice of the animated Batman in various projects from 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series" right up until this year's "Batman: Gotham Knight," brought a darker, raspier vocalization to Batman.

Conroy has inhabit the role longer than anyone else and though animated voice-over work doesn't have the same cachet as feature film acting, there are quarters where Conroy is viewed as the best Batman of them all certainly superior to Val Kilmer or George Clooney.

The animated series are notable because they drew on the DC Comics of Batman as envisioned by Frank Miller, whose work heavily informs "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight." (Bale and Nolan were unavailable to comment for this story.)

As Batman has gotten darker, his voice has gotten deeper. As some critics suggest, Bale and "The Dark Knight" may have reached a threshold, at least audibly. Read More......

Disney's "WALL-E" wows North American box office

Animation giant Pixar scored its ninth consecutive No. 1 on Sunday with its robot love story "WALL-E," while Angelina Jolie achieved a personal best with her violent assassination thriller "Wanted."

"WALL-E," bolstered by near-unanimous critical praise, sold an estimated $62.5 million of tickets in its first three days, said Pixar's Walt Disney Co parent.

It tied with 2001's "Monsters, Inc." to become Pixar's third-best opener. Pixar has gone to No. 1 with all nine of its movies, an unprecedented run that begin in 1995 with "Toy Story."

The company record of $70.5 million was set in 2004 by "The Incredibles." Industry pundits had forecast an opening for "WALL-E" in the $50 million to $60 million range.

"Anything north of 60 (million dollars), we were going to be ecstatic," said Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group.

Meanwhile Jolie, whose career has been overshadowed in recent years by breathless tabloid coverage of her personal life, kicked off at No. 2 with "Wanted." The Universal Pictures release earned about $51.1 million, easily beating forecasts of an opening in the mid- to high-$30 million range.

Her previous record for a live-action movie was 2005's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which opened to $50 million. The General Electric Co-owned studio said "Wanted" ranks as the third-highest opening for an R-rated action film, behind "The Matrix Reloaded ($91.7 million) and "300" ($70.9 million).

SALES SOAR

"WALL-E" and "Wanted," clearly aimed at disparate audiences, helped pushed overall sales to their highest level of the year, said tracking firm Media By Numbers. The top 12 films grossed $179 million, up 29 percent from last weekend, and up 20 percent from the year-ago period, when Pixar's "Ratatouille" opened at No. 1 with $47 million on its way to $206 million.

Last weekend's champion, the Warner Bros spy comedy "Get Smart," slipped to No. 3 with $20 million, taking its 10-day haul to $77.3 million. The film, which stars Steve Carell as the inept hero Maxwell Smart, should finish up with about $130 million, said the Time Warner Inc-owned studio.

Rounding out the top five, Pixar rival DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc's "Kung Fu Panda" slipped one to No. 4 with $11.7 million, taking its total to $179.3 million. The film opened four weeks ago to $60.2 million.

Marvel Entertainment Inc's "The Incredible Hulk" fell three to No. 5 with $9.2 million. The superhero adaptation has earned $115.5 million after three weeks, roughly on par with its unloved 2003 predecessor "The Hulk."

"WALL-E," a space adventure mixing an unusual love story with somber messages about the future of Earth and humankind, was directed by Andrew Stanton, who won an Academy Award for Pixar's 2003 hit "Finding Nemo."

The title character, or Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, is the last of a cadre of robots tasked with cleaning up piles of trash discarded by humans who abandoned the planet centuries before.

The human race set off on a luxury space cruise during a planned five-year clean-up that lasts much longer and results in unfortunate changes in the human physique and psyche.

The arrival of a sleek girl robot named Eve, sent to Earth by the orbiting humans to look for plant life, sends Wall-E on an adventure that changes his own and humanity's destinies.

Critics heaped praise on the film. According to Rotten Tomatoes, a Web site that collects reviews, an astonishing 96 percent of critics liked the film.

Disney's Zoradi said "WALL-E" was not a conventional cartoon, but the studio was "confident from the get-go" that it would work. He declined to reveal the film's budget, in line with Disney's policy.

"WALL-E" also opened at No. 1 in six small foreign markets, led by Brazil with $1.6 million, Zoradi said. It will reach Russia and Mexico next weekend, followed by the U.K. in mid-July, timed with the school holidays in each market. Read More......
